Catriona Cardie, BA (Hons) Hospitality & Tourism Management, 1995 “My career is entirely built on the course I chose at Napier. It encouraged practical application of management theory and the placement year was invaluable in offering a quality industry experience. Importantly, Napier provided a framework which ingrained the value of confident presentation, networking and business planning skills. “Without my degree – very specifically that it was a Tourism Management degree – I would not have secured my first full time job with Perthshire Tourist Board. This set a career path for me in Destination Marketing which I have loved and which has also offered real variety given that I have spent time with geographic destinations, with retail destinations and with landmark visitor attractions. 95 “We had great lecturers, particularly Philip Goulding, who offered great enthusiasm and knowledge of the international tourism industries and who I considered inspirational despite his modesty; and John Revuelta, who inspired me to explore specialising in marketing and who I considered aspirational – I really admired his real life industry insight from senior roles he held with Thomas Cook. I have also enjoyed staying in touch with Napier through my fabulous dissertation tutor Anna Leask. “I have kept in touch with many friends from University – one I see regularly, while others are around the world and keep in touch through email and social media – a few were even at my wedding! “My proudest professional achievement was winning the VisitScotland National Thistle Award for Marketing Campaign of Year and the ASVA Award for Marketing Campaign of The Year, both in 2012.” Nick Lanzl, BA Business Studies, 1996 “The reputation of the business studies course and the ability to have a one year work placement sandwiched between studying encouraged me to apply to Napier. The course and the real life case studies and organisational psychology were instrumental in my career choice, as they confirmed that I wanted to work in the world of finance. I particularly remember Jim Snow and David Begg, who really brought case studies to life. 96 “I had a great balance of studying, sport and socialising. I’m still in touch with several classmates and we meet regularly. I would definitely recommend Edinburgh Napier as a great place to study. “Since graduating I have travelled the world, working in London, New York and Edinburgh, in pension fund management and I’m now managing client’s assets and providing a full wealth management proposition relating to their individual requirements. This can be both enjoyable and rewarding – giving solutions to clients and seeing their assets appreciate, but also challenging, due to increasing regulatory requirements.”
