80 David F. Milne, BSc Biological Sciences, 1980 Why did you choose to study at Edinburgh Napier? “My strengths and interests at school were in the sciences and I wanted a course that had practical elements so I chose Biological Sciences. Even then, Napier had an excellent reputation for producing work ready graduates, so that was a factor too. As I was very keen on rugby and most of my friends were in Edinburgh, Napier seemed a logical choice.” What part did Edinburgh Napier play in helping shape your career and personal development? “Initially, it played a huge part in my career. I went into the pharmaceutical industry in a business development role, where I stayed for 13 years. I was able to utilise the broad range of subjects studied, coupled with the sound foundation I’d developed from the hands-on practical sessions. “Napier gave me a broad, practical foundation on which to build my career. It enabled me to get that (often very difficult) first foot on the ladder. Since then I’ve held senior business development/ sales and marketing roles in a range of sectors and have been on the board of five businesses. I enjoy working, meeting and helping people and my plans are to remain in business development – unless I win the Lotto!” What has been your greatest personal achievement? “Obviously, graduating from Napier was a huge milestone, but my family, business career and playing rugby at a high level have been important too.” Favourite memories of your time at Edinburgh Napier? “Morning break when I enjoyed a milky coffee and four fingered Kit Kat from the tower canteen at Merchiston. I also enjoyed being in a new environment and meeting new people from all over the country.” Would you recommend Edinburgh Napier as a place to study? “Absolutely; I think I would highlight that not only is it an enjoyable place to study – in a beautiful and lively city – but the career prospects on leaving do seem to be stronger than other places.” Did you know… That 92.3% of our undergraduates are in further work or study within six months of graduating, HESA 2012.
