! Types of Tools There are several different tools shears, thinning shears, razors, clippers and attachments even combs. When purchasing shears or thinning shears, you don’t want to purchase nothing less than a 440C cobalt shear. The material is stronger than stainless steel and you can get more cuts out of the blades. Shears these are the most common tools used among hairdressers. They create a clean, blunt edge. Depending on how you hold the shear when cutting you can get very creative with a shear in hand. Thinning Shears are used to thin the hair or create some texture. They make the hair shorter and longer in length. They come in many different styles. Some teeth’s are closer together and wider apart. The wider the teeth are the lesser the hair will be removed. Razors are one of my favorite tools. It creates a taper on the end of each strand. You can create a taper on top, mid — way or on the ends of each strand. Most Afro - American artist have the wrong understanding about the use of a razor. Some will say that relaxed hair can’t take a razor cut. I will be the first to say you are dead wrong. It’s all about proper technique. A lot of times we go in with a jerking stroke, when you should take your time and allow the blade to glide down the hair shaft or use it to make a blunt by pushing the blade toward the floor. There are many types of razors some with guards, some with a naked blade, some that you can insert into a comb and electrical vibrating or hot razors. The main thing is to practice with the different tools and see what type of effect and how the hair will fall after you cut it. Razor Shear is a razor and shear all in one. When the shear is open it acts as a regular shear. When the blades are closed it can be used as a razor with a guard attached to it. This tool allows you to cut and add texture without having to pick up a different tool. One side of the teeth are closer together than the other one. This tool is becoming a favorite among hairstylist today. Clippers are becoming a popular tool among hairdressers. You can get as creative with a clipper as you can with a razor or shear. In fact your able to do more with a clipper than shears or a razor. A clipper creates a clean precise line and it will allow you to cut hair faster than the o \
