Early in 2019, SBCSS’ John Juniper, program manager of Coordinated School Health, will begin training for about 50 schools countywide to shift the culture about dealing with mental health issues on campuses. By 2020, Juniper estimates about 150 county schools will have access to the training. Grant activities will be coordinat- ed between the County Department of Behavioral Health and schools’ Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports work to support students’ overall behavioral and mental health needs as part of a county- wide focus on social/emotional wellness for students as a foundation for academic success. Focus areas of the grant include the edu- cation and care of individuals; community and social support systems; and organiza- tional culture, practice and policies. By establishing a Community Service Providers’ Network, Juniper said teams will concentrate on prevention and early inter- vention to help students with their atten- dance and ultimately improving their edu- cational outcomes.
