Study shows teachers of color are in high demand and also in short supply

Research shows that teachers of color help close achievement gaps for students of color and are highly rated by students of all races – a fact that is relevant in light of the release this month of data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress .
This year ’ s NAEP results show persistent achievement gaps between students of color and from low-income families and their peers who are White or from more affluent families . Although more teachers of color

ACSA sponsoring bill to reduce duplicative reporting

ACSA is sponsoring a bill in the Capitol , Assembly Bill 3096 ( Rubio ), aimed at relieving the burden of duplicative reporting from school districts .
Specifically , AB 3096 would streamline the reporting requirements by requiring the California Department of Education to develop and annually complete a School Accountability Report Card for each school and make the SARCs available online instead of requiring school districts to annually complete the SARC as a separate report .
School districts with internet access would be required to provide a link to the SARC for every school in their districts . The governing boards of school districts would continue to annually publicize the availability of the SARC for each school within their districts and notify parents that a hard copy will be provided upon request .

Assembly Education Committee on the impact of duplicative reporting . She testified that the bill would allow school leaders more time to better support teachers and staff members to improve instructional practice and direct services to students . She also noted the bill is designed to increase parent engagement since transparency and consistency of information builds trust , and trust builds partnerships with parents .
Afterward , Shepherd shared that she got as much from the experience as she hoped legislators did .
“ This was the best school administrator PD for learning about legislative action practices and learning how to effectively advocate for our students at the state level ,” Shepherd said . “ When I joined ACSA I had no idea that I would be getting such a great learning experience . I learned so much from the excellent coaching from our passionate ACSA legislative experts and am confident about sharing this with other California school administrators .”

These are among the findings in a new report by the Learning Policy Institute that examined national data and recent research on the barriers teachers of color face to both entering and staying in the profession . It includes recommendations intended to help policymakers increase teacher workforce diversity – an especially important strategy to advance greater cultural understanding and combat persistent achievement gaps in the United States .

Charter study . A new study examines the issue of charter schools and the achievement gap .
