Her fellow club members and advisor have expressed their congratulations! Speaking of other cultures, ECOT offers a Spanish Club. “This was Spanish Club’s second year at ECOT, and we set out to study the language, culture, and also make a difference in the lives of others,” said Bryan Householder, a Spanish teacher and the club’s advisor. “In November, the Spanish Club students chose items that made up 24 activity bags that were sent down to patients at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.” Students looking to get a leg up in the business world benefitted from joining up with the Young Business Professionals Club. ECOT educators Jennifer Jorrey and Stephanie Sak both serve as advisors to the group. “The Young Business Professionals Club experienced rising numbers of student interest throughout the school year and currently has 44 active members,” Jorrey said. The club was founded “to allow students to learn about real-world business, discover how to become an entrepreneur and interact with business leaders and prospective employers,” she added. Members were handed opportunities to prepare for their careers, network with peers and business professionals, develop leadership skills, and form strong friendships. “Meetings entailed active participation, exciting activities and student spotlights,” Jorrey said. Topics of discussion included: “First Impressions,” “Dress for Success,” “Common Job Interview Questions,” “Leadership,” “Entrepreneurship,” “What Employers Want,” “Résumé Workshop,” “Interviews,” “Business Ethics,” and “International Business.” “The Young Business Professionals Club has helped me get ready for the interviews I plan to go on this summer,” said Rae Huffman, a junior at ECOT. “My favorite thing was the teamwork game we did where we played football with annotating arrows to show leadership. My favorite topic was how to dress and act for a job interview.” James Guarendi, also a junior, offered his own sentiments. “YBPC has helped me over the school year to become more successful in life,” he said. “It taught me what I needed to learn to get a job and how to start a business. The advisors were awesome, and I learned so much more about business than I would have in another school.” “My favorite thing about the YBPC was being able to share my ideas with my friends and advisors,” he added. “My favorite topic was how we should dress in an interview. It was my favorite because I learned about what to wear and not to wear at an interview.” ECOT’s Creative Writing Club also enjoyed a successful run with more than 100 students putting pen to paper and fingers to keyboards. “Poems, essays, stories, have been posted by students in discussion boards for sharing,” Tami Absi, club advisor, said. “In our poetry discussion board alone, we’ve accumulated 12 pages of posts!” 5
