Art…Online at ECOT At first thought, it doesn’t seem easy teaching art to kids sitting at home on their computers. After all, instructors can’t show students how to hold a brush or mold clay in person. Furthermore, it’s impossible to stroll around the class, offering suggestions and assistance to works in progress. But ECOT art teachers make it work well. “The great thing about taking art at ECOT is students are working from home in their own surroundings, said Jennifer Patton, high school art teacher. “They have the privacy and security to make more personally meaningful pieces of art without worrying about what others may think.” Students still get their hands dirty with charcoal and paint as they construct various art projects. “What I love about teaching art at ECOT is that if I assign a still life drawing, students are responsible for setting up their own objects … no two drawings will be alike,” she added. Like their counterparts in brick and mortar classrooms, ECOT students receive visual demonstrations in class. “At ECOT, we accomplish this via the use of webcams in WebEx as well as teacher-made videos,” Patton said. “The art department currently has one middle school art teacher and six high school art teachers that teach Art Appreciation and Art 1 through 5.” “We also have two fabulous DEC teachers who help us with our students on an IEP,” she added. Junior Megan Frisco said she’s grown as an artist as a result her experience with the school’s art education. “I really ventured more into things I wouldn’t normally do,” she said. “I never really used color and a lot of the water color lessons made me branch out into a new style. I used to do only graphite and charcoal.
