Amber S. Hawkins was born,

and raised in Toledo, Ohio to

Walter and Gussie Hawkins (both deceased). She has three other siblings—older sister Wilma, older brother Arthur and the youngest named Waverley. Her schooling included not only elementary but Catholic junior high and high school. When she graduated from school, it was noticeable that she was the only African-American female in her class, and the only African-American in her class who was a member of the National Honor Society.

She attended the University of Findlay (formerly known as Findlay College) with a dual BA in Spanish and Social Work. Extracurricular activities included Treasurer of the Spanish Club, member of the Student Government, Secretary of the Black Student Union, and received her first taste of being a radio broadcaster and a disc jockey for the college’s radio station WLFC-FM . She was one of the few African-American disc jockeys, known as “Sweet Ambi.” She was the ONLY disc jockey during her junior and senior years that had the 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. spots on Saturday mornings and later from 8 p.m. – 12 a.m. spot on Sunday nights.

She later attended the University of Toledo where she earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology—Human Resources Specification. ,Various positions included Support Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, Drug Abuse Counselor and Volunteer Coordinator. She worked for companies and non-profits such as Connecting Point, Pilkington, Eaton Corporation and Volunteers of America. After being laid off for the fifth time, she would later attend ASSETS Toledo—a 13-week training program for individuals who wanted to become small business owners. After graduation she used $1,000 of unemployment money, a wing, and prayer
