The British Red Cross came to visit the Chatter team on October 4 th . The British Red Cross is an organisation that helps people in need and it is also a charity .
We met one of their workers called Esther and she taught us first aid .
We learned how to help someone who was having a seizure , someone who was drunk and someone who was injured . It is always useful to find an adult to help you and see if there is a first aid kit nearby .
Drunk people often need first aid . Signs of too much alcohol are dizziness , falling over , being sick , fighting and slurring words .
We talked about hypothermia . Did you know that you don ’ t only get hypothermia from being outside in the cold - you can get it indoors too ? This is more likely to happen to small babies and the elderly . The signs of hypothermia include turning blue , shivering , confusion and loosing consciousness .
We talked about the DR ABC approach to help people who are unconscious . This is explained on the other part of this page . The important thing to remember is to call for help and only do what you are confident and comfortable to do .

DANGER

Check for danger . It ’ s important to keep yourself safe as well as the casualty .

Response

You need to find out if the casualty is conscious . Gently shake the person by the shoulders while saying “ Hello . Can you tell me your name ?” Make sure that you speak loudly and clearly .

Airway

Look in the mouth to see if anything is blocking the airway eg . vomit or an object . If they are unconscious , tilt their head back and lift their chin towards the sky .

Breathing

Find out if your casualty is breathing . To do this , put your cheek in front of the nose and mouth . Can you feel any breaths ? While doing this , look down to the chest . Is it going up and down as they breathe in and out ?

Circulation

If you are confident that the casualty ’ s heart has stopped beating you can perform CPR . Only do this if you have had first aid training . Give 30 chest compressions then 2 breaths . Take turns and repeat until help arrives .
