W HY W ATER ? “Water and sanitation underpin health, education and livelihoods, and yet hundreds of millions of people live without these basic human rights.” Water is crucial to all living substances on earth. We use water every day when we work. We depend on water every day to complete daily tasks such as bathing and cooking, washing clothes and keeping communities clean. We depend on water to survive. Worldwide, 884 million people live without safe water. 2.4 billion people don’t have access to adequate sanitation – one in three of the world’s population. Over 315 thousands children die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation – that’s almost 900 children every day 1 . W HY W ATER A ID ? “WaterAid tackles the crisis from all angles, working with local partners to deliver services, influencing decision-makers to make change happen, and generating incredible support across the world.” WaterAid works in partnership with local organizations to help the poorest and most marginalized communities to set up practical and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene projects that meet their real needs. All WaterAid projects support the construction of communal or household- level toilet facilities in rural communities, urban slums and primary schools. Improved sanitation facilities help keep human waste away from water sources and other human contact 2 . 1 2 WaterAid Canada, 2017 WaterAid Canada, 2017 7
