S N A C K S Snack time provides a valuable learning experience for the children as they experiment with taste, smell, color, texture, taking turns, making choices and helping themselves. Parents are asked to take turns bringing an appropriate snack. This will be a chance for you and your child to plan together what he/she will bring on their special days. Children are encouraged to throw their own cup and napkin away when they are finished with their snack. State Law prohibits serving any food prepared at home. All food and drink must come to school in unopened packages. Food to be sliced will be prepared at school. Parents may sign up to bring snacks to the parent group. Parent snack may be store bought or homemade. All food and drink for the adults should be brought to the Parent Education Room. For the safety of the children, we ask that you not bring any personal drinks or food into the children’s classroom or leave on the hallway coat rack/shelves. One of the following items plus bottled water is an adequate snack for young children. Remember, it is fine to serve the same snack over and over again. Children like repetition, even though adults get bored. Some suggestions for nutritious snacks are: • Raw vegetables (celery, broccoli, cucumbers, cauliflower) • Cheese/Cream Cheese/Cottage Cheese • Fresh fruit (oranges, apples, bananas, pears, peaches) • Whole grain crackers • Raisins • Yogurt • Pretzels • Whole wheat or enriched breads Please avoid bringing the following food and beverages because they are high in salt, sugar, food coloring, preservatives, or pose a potential choking hazard: • Canned fruit in sugar syrup • Peanuts and seeds • Popcorn • Cakes, cookies, candy • Nuts • Hi-C • Kool Aid • Hawaiian Punch • pop • Whole grapes 9
