A Short History

Stručná historie

Architect, Artist and Engineer Santiago Calatrava was
born in 1951 in Valencia, Spain. He attended primary
and secondary school in Valencia and, from the age of
eight, he also attended the Arts and Crafts School,
where he began his formal instruction in drawing and
painting. Upon completing high school in Valencia and
following a period spent in Paris, he enrolled in the
Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Valencia
where he received a degree in Architecture and took a
post-graduate course in Urbanism.

Architekt, umělec a inženýr Santiago Calatrava se
narodil roku 1951 ve Valencii ve Španělsku. Základní a
střední školu navštěvoval ve Valencii a od svých osmi
let také navštěvoval uměleckoprůmyslovou školu Arts
and Crafts School, kde se začal formálně vzdělávat v
oboru kresby a malby. Po dokončení střední školy ve
Valencii a krátkém studijním období stráveném v
Paříži se zapsal na Vysokou školu architektury ve
Valencii, kde získal titul v oboru architektura a
postgraduálně studoval urbanismus.

Attracted by the mathematical rigor of certain great
works of historic architecture Calatrava decided to
pursue post-graduate studies in Civil Engineering and
enrolled in 1975 at the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology) in Zurich. He received his Ph.D. in 1981
presenting a thesis: Concerning the Foldability of
Space Frames.

Přitahován matematickou přesností některých velkých
děl historické architektury se Calatrava rozhodl
pokračovat postgraduálním studiem stavebního
inženýrství a zapsal se v roce 1975 na ETH (Švýcarský
federální technologický institut) v Curychu. Titul Ph.D.
získal v roce 1981 prezentací závěrečné práce na téma
prostorových rámů.

After completing his studies, he took on small
engineering commissions, such as designing the
balcony of a private residence. He also began to enter
competitions with his first winning proposal in 1983
for the design and construction of Stadelhofen
Railway Station in Zurich, the city in which he
established his first office. In 1984, Calatrava designed
the Bach de Roda Bridge in Barcelona. This was the
first of the bridge projects that established his
international reputation. Among other notable
