Understanding who those influencers are, and the processes which are involved, in setting and enforcing policy is critical to our mission of diversity. President Barack Obama has explained it this way, “There is probably a perverse pride in my administration . . . that we were going to do the right thing, even if short-term it was unpopular. And I think anybody who’s occupied this office has to remember that success is determined by an intersection in policy and politics and that you can’t be neglecting of marketing, and P.R., and public opinion.” “Policy” is defined as a principle of action adopted or proposed by a government, party, business, or individual. To expand, policy is the implementation framework under which governmental and non-governmental organizations, corporations, and businesses, alike, work to solve economic, social, and political or business issues. Policy defines the roles and responsibilities of contributors in a system to include the designation, allocation, and delivery of resources to resolve issues. This is significant because its consequences proliferate through the fabric of our society, either directly or indirectly. Policies encourage certain behavior and equally encourage, as well as discourage, particular actions. Drug Policy Alliance and the Trevon Martin Foundation. In this issue focused on “Policy,” we feature Michael Skolnik as our cover story. Skolnik is the President and Chief Editor of GlobalGrind.com. A civil rights activist and strong communicator, Skolnik has been center stage providing influence and leadership in a wide range of policies affecting our nation.
