DyNAMC "New Beginnings" February 2014 Issue 3 | Page 10

President’s Perspective “ “Nothing is predestined. The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings”. Ralph Blum A new year has just begun. A traditional time for individuals and organizations to take stock, re-group and re-focus for the year ahead. It’s a new beginning. I used the two quotes at the beginning because they demonstrate the choice we have in our attitudes towards new beginnings. Instead of the negative perspective that focuses on the challenges we face and what is left to be done, in the first issue of DyNAMC for 2014 we want to focus on the positives. In this issue, you will find plenty of new beginnings worth celebrating: New opportunities, new economic initiatives, and new business startups – positive steps that are being taken around our nation that will benefit the NAMC membership of minority business owners. DyNAMC Nominated for 2014 Association Media & Publishing Excellence Award! DyNAMC • ISSUE 3 DyNAMC – Leaders for a Changing World was 10 launched in 2013 as a means to provide diverse businesses as well as those diversity professionals and corporations that champion diversity inclusion with fresh perspectives. It was also intended as a vehicle for insightful inspiration “We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.” ~ Ellen Goodman President’s Perspective New Beginnings Forward March Aldrica Latimore Founder and practical business advice. Our first issue in July of 2013 was received with great enthusiasm by our readers. The second issue, published in October of 2013, reached an even broader spectrum of the national audience. Again, the high-quality of the content and the professional presentation of the publication caught the eye of people of note in the business world, political circles, and also the media and publishing sectors themselves.. As a result, we are celebrating the nomination of the magazine for a 2014 Association Media & Publishing Excellence Award. Nomination by this organization is a prestigious and coveted place of recognition, which includes names such as Leaders Edge Magazine and BizEd Magazine in its past award listings. In keeping with the newest technology options for media, DyNAMC is now available in print form as well as the option to read the publication on digital media. We encourage you to share the magazine in either form with your business colleagues and other members of your network. New Initiatives One of the primary themes you’ll find running through the various articles in this issue is new beginnings. City and state governments around the country are launching new and exciting opportunities to help create more prospects for minority, veteran and women owned businesses. Small business is being recognized in many sectors as an important ingredient in job creation and stimulation of the economy. Our voices are being heard! At the same time, we do not want to let these advances in the right direction lull us into a place of lethargy and inaction. The philosopher Plato is quoted as saying, “The beginning is the most important part of the work.” I would agree, but to start well and never progress further makes that important work futile. At NAMC, we expect each New Year to begin stronger and at a place closer to our goals than the year before. In order for that to happen, we need to continue to grow our membership and strengthen our unified front. 2013 was a tremendous year of new beginnings for us. We can make 2014 even better! But only with your continued support and participation. Let’s end 2014 even stronger than we have begun! 10
