FITNESS by Des Grisham SIDEWAYS
STAIR STEP If headed west from Main or Spring St on foot to the Financial district or towards the 110 fwy, use the stairs. There are oodles of them throughout the city: Angels Flight, around the train stations, anywhere with a hill or incline as there is usually a set close by. Turn your toes to point diagonally left into the corner of each stair, making sure your whole foot is on the step, proceed to step up with your right foot, then on the next step cross your left foot over to the right. Keep ascend- ing this way til you reach the next tier. Then direct your toes diagonally to the right corner of each step and step left, and cross over to the right and so on. This strengthens the knees while increasing your cardio fitness. If your staircase is a long one, switch to taking them straight on, two at a time while pressing down on your heels as they target to work out the gluteus maximus.
