The internationally renowned design firm of Herzog & de
Meuron has been working with developer SunCal to cre-
ate “6AM,” a world-class, mixed-use development at 6th
& Alameda in the heart of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts
District. The Pritzker Prize-winning firm is planning a com-
plex that will feature live/work residences, creative offic-
es, hotel and retail uses, and public gathering spaces on a
14.5-acre site.
This project is envisioned to feature a contemporary de-
sign that assesses and understands the character of the
Arts District and expresses it in a building concept for to-
day and the future. In all its details, 6AM will remain faithful
to the well-articulated preferences of the local community,
which include high-quality design, durable materials and a
place where “art can flourish in the Arts District.”
The 6AM site is the single largest parcel in the Arts District,
and this development will bring significant benefits to the
community, such as a school and art opportunity space,
that residents and visitors alike can enjoy. It will provide
public and private outdoor space, art creation space and
exhibition space, school, fitness centers, outdoor pools
and spas, a grocer and food hall, and abundant parking.
Keeping with the fabric and characteristics of the Arts Dis-
trict has been a priority in shaping the plans for 6AM. This
project embodies various recommendations from public
planning workshops held by local organizations that were
open to Arts District stakeholders. These supported rec-
ommendations include improved pedestrian infrastruc-
ture; more green space; exhibition venues; alternative en-
ergy sources; a river walk; public art; and maintaining the
unique character of the Arts District.
Herzog & de Meuron are among the most thoughtful and
accomplished design firms in the world. Each of their
designs – which includes the “Bird’s Nest” Olympic Sta-
dium in Beijing, the de Young Museum in San Francisco,
1111 Lincoln Road and the Perez Art Museum in Miami –
responds uniquely to its context and purpose. Based in
Basel, Switzerland, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron
won the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest international
honor, in 2001.
Based on the heritage and characteristics, or typologies,
that define the Arts District, Herzog & de Meuron have
evolved the architectural concept of the “Fabric,” “Table,”
“Fingers” and “Skyline” for 6AM. The entire property is de-
fined by a horizontal “Table” at an elevation of 40 feet, re-
