It is springtime in Downtown Los Angeles and there are so many exciting things happening
everywhere. I would like to share something else that is very exciting. The opportunity for
you to get involved in helping give back to our community by joining, ‘The Companionship
Volunteer Program’:
WHAT IS IT?
The Companionship Program aims to provide social support to those who are transitioning
into permanent housing. It helps reduce the social isolation experienced by recently-housed,
formerly homeless individuals. Volunteers have the opportunity to offer a friendship and develop a meaningful connection.
WHAT’S THE TIME COMMITMENT?
Four hours a month for six months starting in June. Volunteers are matched with a companion, with whom they meet and engage in simple social interactions, including chatting over
a meal or going on walks.
WILL I GET SOME HELP?
United Way will provide the training and assessments needed to match volunteers with
their companion. We will offer ongoing management and supervision. Training will provide
education on homelessness and its impact on people, relationships, de-escalation (harm
reduction techniques) and confidentiality.
