Face to Face–Technical SECOND NATURE OFFERS NUTRITIOUS, TASTE-FILLED BOTTLES OF GOODNESS In an interaction with Mandeep Kaur from Drink Asia Magazine, Dipti Motiani, Founder and Chief Product Officer of Second Nature explained about the company’s focus on product quality and what all measures they are taking to strengthen the brand and its product portfolio. 1 Tell us about Second Nature. How did you conceive the idea of starting this business? Second Nature is a legacy of Freshtrop. Freshtrop has been a leading and consistent supplier of fresh grapes from India to leading supermarkets in Europe for over 25 years. Focus on quality through a systematic approach to food safety and traceability has been the directing forces for our operations. Bringing these values to the domestic market have been on our mind for a long time. Second Nature is our venture to bring these high standards of quality and food safety to the Indian consumer. 2 What is your business model? How is Second Nature's concept different from others in the industry? At Second Nature, we ensure that health and nutrition are maintained in our products by the following processes: • Post-harvest management is key to retain the taste and nutrition of fresh fruits. Second Nature’s team of harvesters ensure that the fruit is harvested at the right time and is then shipped to the facility within hours of harvesting. At the facility, the fruits are immediately put into a temperature- controlled environment to ensure freshness without any nutrition loss. These are the fruits that are processed at Second Nature • Juices from fruits and vegetables are extracted using cold extraction processes. Juice and pulp are gently extracted under Drink Asia 32 vacuum to prevent oxidation and loss of natural flavours. • We u s e t h e l a t e s t technology, HPP (High- Pressure Processing) which is an environment-friendly process that respects the ingredients and ensures retention of the nutrition and original flavour of the fruits, vegetables and nuts. • Our top-of-the-line facility in Nasik, which is routinely audited by the independent auditors to ensure superior hygiene and quality. We comply with global hygiene and food safety standards such as FSSC 22000. We are constantly working with our delivery partners to deliver fresh juices and nut milk right to the doorstep of customers. Maintaining the cold chain is very important for retention of taste and nutrition thus; all products March-April 2019 are shipped by the Second Nature team to maintain the requisite temperature and hygiene conditions all through the supply chain. In India, there aren’t too many players in the cold extracted segment yet. But we feel that India is really a growing market. In order to create a category, we need multiple players; hence it’s not overcrowded yet. 3 From where do you source the raw materials? Tell us in detail about your products and processes. We source directly from farmers. We maintain the cold-chain all the way from the farm, thereby retaining maximum nutrition, taste and reducing wastages as well as the costs of intermediaries.
