News SCOTLAND RECORDS HIGHEST EVER DRUG DEATHS SCOTLAND HAS YET AGAIN RECORDED its highest ever number of drug-related deaths, at 934. The 2017 figure is 8 per cent up on the previous year (DDN, September 2017, page 4) and more than double the number from a decade ago. Scotland’s drug-death rate remains the highest of any EU country, and is around two and a half times that of the UK as a whole. Almost 40 per cent of the deaths were of people aged 35-44 and just under 30 per cent were in the 45-54 age group. Males accounted for 70 per cent of the deaths. As in previous years, the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS board area recorded the highest proportion, at 30 per cent. Opioids were implicated in ‘or potentially contributed to’ 87 per cent of the total number of deaths, with benzodiazepines implicated in or potentially contributing to 59 per cent. The ‘sheer toll’ of drug-related deaths represented a ‘staggering weight carried by families and communities and the wider Scottish nation’, said Scottish Drugs Forum CEO David Liddell. ‘Just over 10,000 people have now died since these figures were first issued in 1996. That is the equivalent of the entire population of a Scottish town like Fort William or Stranraer or Methill or Haddington. Last year was a record high – and so was the year before and the year before that.’ Although Scots were now more than five times more likely to die from drugs than in traffic accidents the deaths were ‘entirely &WfVF&^( R7FFVB( vRprF&WfVBG'Vr&VFVBFVF2( 2BWBvRF( @FFBvR6VBF&WfVBFV( Bv2fFF@VRB66W72F( vVƗGVF6&R@7W'N( R7G&W76VB2vV2&Vr&VfVBg&( FPFvW'2bV&VwVFVB7G&VWBG'Vw>( ( Wr66GF6G'Vw27G&FVw2GVRF&RV6V@( 2vRBv2&6VBFRFFBVRBFP&vBFƖfR( R6BFVvFRf7B&GbFVF2vW&RpVFRW&6VFvR7&V6W2&WGvVV#2r@#2rvW&Rf"vW"f"vV( 2B&RF#W"6VB( 2B6W&FR&W'B7VvvW7G2FB&V60$rTE0TTt4t24B66FB#rf"WfW'GVBFW6VVBFRvVVǐwVFVƖR'CW"6VB( WfW'vVVbFRV.( 66&FrF266FB&RFFVƗG&W0bW&R6W"GVBvW&R6B60F&rBWfVFr66FN( 267G&FVwWVfVBFbVG2W"W'6W vVV( vF&FW2b67V6f2FVF07&V6r&V6VBV'2B6&VFV@7FF֗762fW"FW2vW"FFWvW&RFR2B2&R'FBFWfW"FBvR6FVRFF"6&6R67VFB6&VFVB&2Ff&BWfVFRƖ7( 6BVBWF V6RvW2&W'BBwwrVF66FB66@BG&FG'Vw6Ww2VǒVwW7B#6VFR7&V6p&FW2b66@VFVF&&V0rvVvW6PG'Vw22vV2f7F'07V62'W6fR 6W&6fR&VF626Wv&BFR7@bvVf&R&Vf&VvRWp&W'Bg&&VVЧ62FBVWfV&f6bR06G&'WFrFv&FW2bfFfW&F6Pr&6W'2FPW&BVFFVǐgFW"&VV6R6GVF4TǐFW67&&VB2( FFǐW7W6&^( ( F琧VR&RfƖpF&VvFRv2@FVR&PGr( R6BG'Vr&VFVBFVF266FB#r@wwr'66FBvbVv&RG'VrЧ&VFVBFVF2pvV7&V6r66FC@wwrvb66@fW&R'FW6vBF6fW7FVCFP7&F67FFRb7W7FGЦ6VGG&6F0B&VV6G&rVǒw&FW0&WB&6R&f6vR@T$ET5D$T4$BԄt$ET5DWfV2f"FW0B66R6WVBvFWFrG'Vp&WG2VFRG'Vw2&Rr( &vvW v&F&VBFV&Ɩ2VFBpVf&6VVBFWfW"&Vf&^( 66&FrFTD>( 2FW7Bv&BG'Vr&W'Bv&VЧ&GV7Fw&Wr'cRW"6VB&WGvVV#`B#rFRvW7BW7FFRWfW"&V6&FVB'TD2vF&GV7Ffv7Fখ7&V6r'rW"6VBDDFV6V&W"V'vRBv&66RVf7GW&RVvR6&V6VBG2vW7BWfW"WfV#bBW7FFVBCF2v&BG'Vr&W'B#BwwrVF2&pԔTEDU%0( vRprF&WfV@G'Vr&VFV@FVF2( 0BWBvPF( BFFBvR6V@F&WfV@FV( FfBƖFFVDRD54T$Œd"tU20&fVBFRG&GV7Fb֖VV@&6rUf"6&fbFP( F&( V&Ɩ2VF֖V&6Rf 6’vW2&v6v2G&GV6VB7@V"DDfV&W"#rvRBV0FBUv&V6Rr262B0&V6VfVB&76VBvW26VW2&V@SR6&VFVB7FF֗762V"B67BFFR2b&RF *3S4%B4$e@F&VRffRVR6VBF&6f 6VFV6W2bW72F6F2&W'BG'Vr"6&&V'&f66&FpFdFF'FVB'FR&WffrF'0vV7FRFFFV7G&FW2FRVVBf"( &F6Wr&6( 62FR&v6Fv626V&Ɨ6VB&W'BFP( 7&F6( &RbƖ6RB7&P6֗76W'2FG&W76r7V'7F6P֗7W6R( F22&'W7BWfFV6RbFRVVBFF6R&&V2V&ƖW"F&WfVBFR76R`7&62B7&R( 6B6VbWV7WFfR6&7F'&GB7FƖvB7V'7F6R֗7W6SVW&vrvB&7F6R7&7242&V2@wwr&WffrF'2&rV4D4$0DR4D4TDR2fFVBF&VvFR6&07BDDVRvRBVrFBGVG2vp&R&RFVvǒW&66Rw&rBW6RƖ֗FV@VFGbFRG'Vr( &VBbFRv&66Ɨ6VB'W"vfW&VB&ƖVF&2@6F2v6G&'WFVBFF2'FB6gBW"6VG'w2&6F6&2( 6BW7F6R֖7FW BGF&WvVW&Gv6&&VB( W"v0&RF&FV7BW"WFg&FRVFB6fWG&60bW6r6&2BVW7&֖2B&v6V@7&Rg&&fFrg&G2&GV7FF7G&'WFB6R( TD2vWfW"77VVB7FFVVB6pFBB( &Vw&WGFVN( FRFV66v6vVBVFW&֖P( W"v0&RF&FV7@W"WF( Gv4&$V@FR( FW&FVvG'Vr6G&g&Wv&@&W7V7Bf"FR'VW2&6VBFW&F&FW.( wwrG&FG'Vw6Ww26
