PETA'S NEW FURry SCHEME

Britain's leading organization which campaigns against the fur industry, PETA (Protection of the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have revealed their latest scheme in order to entice people into ditching their furry possessions.

Famous for their 'I'd rather go naked than wear fur' campaign, the charity have agreed to allow fur to be worn in one condition... they are worn by homeless people, and homeless people only.

The charity is allowing for fur coats to be donated to London's Liberty department store that will then distribute the coats out to the homeless. Liberty has been a strong attribute to the 'Furbidden' campaign and have embarked in many annual coat trade-offs.

Last year in Detroit, PETA conducted a similar scheme where fur coats were provided to those in need and an astonishing one hundred fur coats were provided to the unfortunate individuals during the freezing winter.

With the advance in more eco-fabrics and the introduction of faux fur, synthetics and many alternatives to fur, it's reasonable to believe that the scheme will prove a success with individuals willing to happily let go off their fur coats. Sadly even though the

majority of people are aware of the going-ons in the fur industry, whether you can face watching videos or reading stories or not. However, the truth of the matter is that the real facts and figures are rarely put out to the public.

Every year 50 million animals are killed for their fur and this excludes the 1 billion rabbits. But more worryingly, 10 million dogs and 4 million cats are also killed for fur, and are actually the suppliers of many fur coats which are mislabelled as being fox, mink or another animal which seems 'ok' to wear. A study in the US found that 70% of labels of fur garments where in fact wrong. Whether it's a cat, dog, fox, mink, raccoon or any other furry creatures, it's about time fur is band, with the latest advances in technology, we as consumers, wouldn't miss out on much. ▪
