PHILADELPHIA, PA - Third grade students learned about how music influenced artist Wassily Kandinsky. We listened to four of Gustav Holt's Planets Compositions. (Mars, Jupiter, Neptune, and Uranus.) As we listened to these pieces on the first day, students used line to interpret and express the music. During the next class, we discussed how different colors made us feel. We listened to Holst's Planets again. This time, we expressed the feeling of the music with color. Cotton & acrylic.

Did you enjoy this project? Students really enjoyed connecting music and artwork. While listening to the pieces, they were able to make the connection that the music had something to do with outer space. (This was before I even told them much about the music) They loved collaborating on the work and watching it dramatically transform over the class periods.
