Atchison County

Elementary School

Mrs. Wagner and Mrs. Stutesman

Effingham, ks - The Atchison County Elementary School picked the equality theme because they had just finished reading the story about Ruby Bridges.

The first graders thought it was very unfair how Ruby was not treated like the other students in their school. We discussed how they would feel if they weren't treated equally. They talked about how sad that would be not being able to play with everyone and how it wouldn't be very fun. We then discussed how times have changed and how now there is a law that states we all are equal.

The first graders said how happy they were that now they all get to play with each other and have fun at school with everyone! They drew pictures of all different children playing together at school on the playground, at lunch, in the classroom, and at library.

The first graders really wanted to show how happy they were that even though everyone is different we all are still friends and all can learn and play together!
