One Day...

By Karsen O.

My artwork is about freedom through equality. This was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream.

When people feel that they are being treated equally it can make them feel good about themselves. The people on the swing symbolize freedom because I remember when I was little and when I would swing I felt free, like I was flying.

To dye my fabric, I rubber banded the cloth into sections and then used ink, instead of dye, to make the colors more vibrant. To make the tin foil tree I made the outline with hot glue. I used Modge Podge and painted it in between the hot glue lines. I crumbled the aluminum foil to give it texture and painted the words and the people with a small paint brush and acrylic paint.

"I Have a Dream" is a public speech delivered by American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. on August 28, 1963, in which he calls for an end to racism in the United States. Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington, the speech was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement.
