PHILADELPHIA, PA - After learning about the term astronomy, second grade students looked at the artwork of Joan Miro and spotted astronomical details in his abstract paintings, such as the moon, and stars.

Next, second grade students worked in small groups to create an abstract piece of art that represents the art of Joan Miro, ensuring elements related to Miro such as colorful moons and simple linear stars were visible in the composition.

They also worked together to create people and animals in Miro's abstract surrealist style.

Students learned how to blend chalk pastels, how to create a resist using oil pastels and watercolor paint, drawing using simple lines and shapes, as well as cutting and gluing.
