BLUE UP
A flash of flames erupt from the opening that once housed a hood scoop in Jim
Widener’s nitrous-assisted ‘17 Corvette as he suffers a nitrous backfire in the
opening round of Pro Nitrous qualifying at the PDRA East Coast Nationals. The
multi-time NMCA world champion qualified in the unlucky No. 13 spot, but he
rebounded nicely by reaching the final round on the strength of two low-3.70-
second passes and a lucky break in the semifinals when defending world champion
Jim Halsey lost a fuel line on the burnout. Widener left on two-time world champion
Tommy Franklin in the final round, but his 3.754 didn’t hold off Franklin’s 3.687.
