Orlando (FL) SpeedWorld Dragway, site of
numerous performance benchmarks in recent
months, continued producing jaw-dropping
numbers at the inaugural Drag Illustrated
World Doorslammer Nationals presented
by CTech Manufacturing. A massive purse,
exceptional track preparation and extremely
rare atmospheric conditions led to career-best
clockings by teams in multiple classes.
Although the race was the first ever
contested under existing National Hot Rod
Association rules for Pro Modified Eliminator
with a full NHRA Technical Inspection crew
on hand, the association declined to permit
official NHRA records to be set during the
meet since it was not held in conjunction with
an NHRA National Event. It should be strongly
noted, however, the NHRA crew supplied
NHRA-mandated equipment, (including the
same turbocharger boost controllers which are
utilized by each turbo car at NHRA National
Events), and, in fact, were complimented by
many teams, (including Rickie Smith!), for the
thorough scrutiny afforded each entry.
Because of the “record moratorium”, the
quickest runs ever recorded under NHRA PM
rules, a stunning pair of 5.626/254.90 and
5.623/253.14 blasts by Justin Bond, won’t be
listed as the Elapsed Time National Standard

anywhere but the DI Top Eight. At the wheel
of a brand-new Jerry Bickel-built 1969 Camaro
racing under the Bahrain1 team umbrella,
British Columbian Bond and crew chief Brad
Personett produced a shocking glimpse of
the power produced by the new ProCharger
engine combination legal in NHRA Pro Mod
racing for 2020.
Other career-bests came from the
Roots-blown Camaros of the legendary Jason
Scruggs, (5.65/254.86), and Alex Laughlin
at the helm of Marc Caruso’s ATI Perfor-
mance Products rig, (5.66), the Corvettes of
Alabamian Brandon Snider, (5.68), and Texan
Jeff Jones (5.72), the once-again Roots-blown
Charger of veteran Chip King, (5.72), and Steve
Matusek, who jumped into the newly-Pro-
charged Freeman/Elite Camaro for one event,
(5.72). Among the turbocharged entries, Hoo-
sier Mike Biehle ran a 5.72 in his well-known
blue Mustang but hit a best-ever 258.32 mph
velocity to claim the fastest PM speed.
It was the legendary Rickie Smith who
opened eyes, however, when he arrived with
his nitrous oxide-injected Bahrain1 Camaro
sporting not the 959 cubic inch powerplant
now legal for NHRA PM but his trusty 903 with
which he has earned nearly all his twenty-first
century titles. It was business as usual for
Smith; he posted an amazing 5.689 at 254.28
mph, the quickest and fastest unblown NHRA
runs ever and the second-fastest nitrous speed
of all time, and was the only nitrous racer to
qualify of the four on the property against
the record 5.739-second bump spot. Why
no big-inch engine now that it’s legal? Said
Smith, “The new rules say the 959 has to carry
seventy-five more pounds and that means it’s
not gonna outrun the 903!”.
