It’s official! As of the first major event of the
North American drag racing series, the U.S.
Street Nationals at Bradenton (FL) Motorsports
Park, the Radial versus The World category is
now the sport’s quickest and fastest passenger
car division…period.
Most often referred to as Drag Radial
Eliminator, the “small tire Pro Modifieds” are
now quicker and faster than any other active
eighth-mile doorslammer class and are rapidly
encroaching on the all-time records held
by the now-defunct Pro Extreme Eliminator.
Likewise, RvW cars regularly eclipse the 660-
feet numbers of NHRA Pro Modified Eliminator
entries which, in fact, have never clocked
below 3.7 seconds or over 210 mph.
Comparisons between NHRA Pro Modified,
PDRA Pro Boost, PDRA Pro Nitrous, NMCA Pro
Modified Eliminators and Radial versus the
World performances are difficult at best due to

different rulesets within almost every organi-
zation and class. However, the paying customer
often knows…nor sees…any difference.
As the NHRA prepares to accept centrifu-
gally-supercharged machines and those with
unblown nitrous engines up to 960 cubic inch-
es, it will do so at decidedly different weight
breaks than the other sanctions. Likewise,
turbocharged cars outside of NHRA Pro Mod
are not required to utilize the NHRA’s man-
datory Boost Controller. Unlike other groups,
the NHRA imposes overdrive restrictions on
Roots-blown cars and doesn’t even allow
screw blowers.
Therefore, it must be noted the RvW
nitrous cars are permitted to weigh a full 325
pounds less than the 960-inch NHRA Pro Mods
for the 2020 season. Roots-blown Radial cars
are allowed to weigh 125 pounds less than
their “big tire” counterparts and ProCharg-
er-equipped racers are 50 pounds lighter.
Turbocharged racers, in general, are heaviest
in RvW racing but the NHRA teams use turbos
restricted in size and boost.
It has become a myth the smaller, narrower
radial tires of the four versions legal for the
class slow down the RvW cars. Despite utiliz-
ing a drastically different power application
program than any other division, RvW racing
right now features the tightest competition
among the four different induction systems.
The miniscule spread of thirty-two thousands
of a second between Supercharged, (3.546,
Steve Jackson), Nitrous Oxide-injected, (3.553,
Marcus Birt), Procharged, (3.563, Bryan
Markiewicz), and Turbocharged, (3.578, Daniel
Pharris), combatants proves Drag Radial racing
may be the best show in drag racing in 2020.
