obvious Brittany’s was far from the quickest
POTENTIAL pass in the sport. Brittany covered
the first sixty feet in 0.816 seconds, a full
thirteen thousandths of a second slower than
Leah Pritchett had posted, (0.803), for the
all-time record only two weeks before at the
NHRA Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals
at Indianapolis (IN). All else being equal, this
meant a Top Fuel car was capable of 3.613
seconds without daydreams.
Likewise, Force ran 2.056 seconds to the
three hundred thirty feet mark; two years
ago, Clay Millican ran the same distance
in 2.047 seconds when he pounded out a
3.628 at Pomona (CA). Again, this leads to
a logically possible 3.615 in the class. In the
eighth-mile, Brittany ran 2.902 which is still
five thousandths a second slower than Milli-
can’s record-holding 2.897. It should be noted
Brittany Force did produce the second-fastest
eighth-mile speed of 299.26 mph just seven
hundredths of a mph behind Shawn Langdon’s
now four year-old record of 299.33 mph.
The consequences are still unknown but
tire companies have made it clear they are not
(yet) prepared to retool for a production run
of 340 mph rubber. The practice of “new prep”,
manipulating the track’s surface adhesion at
each event, was originally the “cheapest way
out” decision of the options to slow the cars
for the Professional Racers Organization. How-
ever, the NHRA has spent two years walking
a safety tightrope to kill five mph of perfor-
mance. Most in the know believe the next
“speed penalty” will come in the form of hard
parts and even harder decisions. Meanwhile,
racers, officials and fans hope for a magic
remedy which will be swift and painless.

SUMMERTIME RADIAL RECORDS?
IT HAPPENED!
The last thing any hardcore drag racing fan
expects between June and September is a
record-setting performance from the Drag
Radial contingent. While the class produces
nonstop thrills and chills from autumn through
the spring, horrible conditions and a general
dearth of events keep the DR gang out of the
headlines during the summer.
That’s why the world responded with a fair
amount of shock when Jeff Miller uncorked a
staggering 3.598 to become the third Radial
pilot ever under 3.6 seconds in his well-known
“Bumblebee” Jerry Bickel-built supercharged
2017 Camaro. Miller joined Daniel Pharris’
turbocharged Mustang, (3.57), and Kevin
Rivenbark’s centrifugally-blown Camaro, (3.58),
in the “three fifties”. The run came during a
test session at Darlington (SC) Dragway on
a muggy, overcast August afternoon. Miller’s
EFI-equipped, screw-blown Hemi made
enough power to post runs of 3.63/204.64 and
3.598/206.14.
How rare was the run? It marked the first
movement on the Drag Illustrated Drag Radial
Top 8 List since March, 2019…of ANY kind…
among the forty quickest and fastest drivers in
the class. One can only imagine what numbers
are on the horizon when the Drag Radial
season truly starts!
