334.24 mph, erasing boss John Force’s previ-
ous mark of 333.74 set at the season-opening
Winternationals at Pomona (CA). In fact, the
same qualifying session saw Shawn Langdon’s
Global Electronic Technology Camry, (332.84),
and Jack Beckman’s Infinite Hero Foundation
Charger, (331.29), also clock above the 330
mph “limit” unofficially imposed by the NHRA.
Using a traction application designed to
decrease adhesion in conjunction with an
electronic “rev limiter” on each car which
keeps engine speed well below previous highs,
the association has dropped Funny Car speeds
from Hight’s all-time record of 339.87 set in
2017 to an current average of 329.84 mph at
2019 events. The TF Dragsters have an average
Top Speed in 2019 of 330.22.
Of note is the fact the fastest speed by a
Top Fuel Dragster in the same conditions on
the same track at Chicago was 329.75 mph
by Mike Salinas in the “Scappers” entry which,
coincidentally, set the season’s fastest dragster
pass at 334.40 at Pomona, CA. The Top Fuel
machines and the Funny Cars use the same
RPM controlling device set at the same limit
yet the dragsters were almost five miles per
hour slower at Chicago.
The reason is quite simple. The dragsters
run much stronger in the first eighth-mile than
the Funny Cars, often achieving 295 mph in
2.9 seconds while the Funny Cars hit 283 in
3.2 seconds. This means the dragsters engage
the RPM limiters sooner than the Funny Cars
because the dragsters achieve the RPM limit
point earlier. Aerodynamics, engine load and
clutch timing have nothing to do with the out-
come. The Funny Cars simply get “penalized
later” than the dragsters.

Second generation race Johnny Calvert
wheeled his family’s 2016 Ford Mustang Cobra
Jet to a 7.992 at 174.82 mph to become the
quickest and fastest Stock Eliminator driver in
drag racing history. Competing in FS/AA, the
supercharged 302 cubic inch Ford is easily
confused with the FS/XX machines which
compete in the heads-up School of Auto-
motive Machinists Factory Stock Showdown
at selected NHRA events. However, Calvert’s
Mustang is in a completely different class,
Eliminator Category and even sanction.
The SAM Factory Stock Showdown cars
originally competed in Stock Eliminator but
the NHRA opened the class to more liberal
rules than the FS/AA classification. The NHRA
has been adjusting the SAM FSS cars power
output since the cars began clocking sev-
en-second elapsed times in 2018. Now running
7.70 seconds at 180 mph, the NHRA has made
multiple rules revisions to slow the cars to the
target of eight seconds flat and 175 miles per
hour which the group has steadfastly…and
publicly…maintained.
While confused fans see the rules changes
as attempts to restrain the Fords, Chevys and
Dodges from a performance free-for all, the
objective is an invisible “Index” to keep the
cars competitive and slower than the 7.50-sec-
ond mark at which entirely new chassis would
be required.
It’s also important to remember that, like
Pro Modified and Top Fuel Harley Eliminators,
the SAM FSS is not a part of the NHRA Mello
Yello or Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and, tech-
nically, is not even a part of the National Hot
