260 MPH ON SIX CYLINDERS!
The global football which is the World Record
for Six-Cylinder Drag Racing Powerplants has
once again been booted ten thousand miles.
The speed mark, set only weeks ago by New
Zealander Rod Harvey, was stolen back by
Puerto Rico with an astounding 260 mph blast
from the Brava Lubricants Big 21 racing team.
Using the venerable Toyota 2JZ inline
engine with which almost all six-banger
records have been set, the team’s bright
orange Big 21 2019 Toyota Avalon was at Atco
(NJ) Dragway testing for the 25th edition of
the legendary Pan-American Nationals. Driver
Jomar Gomez wheeled the PMS Race Cars rig
to a career-best 5.79, well off the ET record of
5.66 held by fellow Puerto Rican Victor Flores
in the Zoian New Generation Camry eighteen
months ago.
However, Atco’s speed clocks showed
260.91 miles per hour to make the team the
first to exceed that barrier with anything
less than a V8 engine, let alone a single
turbocharger-equipped 209 cubic inch Toyota
on alcohol fuel. The Big 21 Avalon narrowly
missed resetting American Gary White’s 2016
eighth-mile speed record, (203.90 mph), with

The performance by the
Brava Lubricants team car
brings to NINE the number
of active six-cylinder
passenger cars running
between 5.66 and 5.79 with
six over 250 mph! A total
of five different countries,
all on different continents, are engaged in
the battle.
Team Big 21 and driver Gomez were attend-
ing Atco’s Import Revival which is a qualifying
event for the massive upcoming Pan-American
Nationals at which the first seven-second
four-cylinder effort was recorded when the
“Sakura” 4G54-powered Mitsubishi Mirage
clocked a 7.97 at 168 mph twenty-two years
ago. The 2019 Pan-Am Nationals will no doubt
offer an opportunity for more records from the
sport’s most efficient machines.
FUNNY CARS MURDER
DRAGSTERS AT JOLIET!
The recent NHRA National Event at Route 66
Raceway in Joliet, Illinois, gained an impressive
footnote in the sport’s history. While it has
become common to see a nitro-burning
Funny Car earn Top Speed of the Meet over a
supercharged dragster, it’s not often the Funny
Car runs 4.49 mph faster!
In the fourth and final qualifying session,
Robert Hight’s Automobile Club of Southern
California Camaro set the fastest speed yet
recorded for a fuel Funny Car on the NHRA’s
“New Prep” traction compound solution at
