GONZALEZ, ENDERS PUSH NHRA
PM TURBOS TO NEW HEIGHTS!
While the majority of North American drag
racing in the spring of 2019 was virtually
wiped out by incessant rain and violent storms,
the few events which were completed proved
the successful never sleep. While dismal
atmospheric conditions at most major races
kept performances far below spectacular, the
turbocharged contingent in NHRA Pro Modi-
fied Eliminator forged ever onward.
At the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at
Bruton Smith’s zMAX Dragway in Concord, NC,
the “air” was seldom better than 2,600 feet
above sea level but, during the first qualifying
session which was conducted just ahead of a
major storm in 1,900 feet corrected elevation,
Jose Gonzalez blasted to a 5.657 at 257.14 mph
in his twin-turbocharged ProLine-powered
Q80 2017 Camaro. The pass was not only the
quickest elapsed time ever clocked by a tur-
bo’d NHRA Pro Mod, (and the second-quickest
ever by anybody in the class), but it was five
hundredths of a second quicker than any other
effort in the qualifying session.
In fact, the 5.65 was the only “sixty”
recorded during the race. In truly nasty

conditions on Sunday, (3,300 feet), only Rickie
Smith’s turbo Mustang (5.77) and the eventual
meet winner, NHRA world champ Mike Janis’
supercharged ’69 Camaro (5.79) ran quicker
than Gonzalez’s eliminations best of 5.80.
At the same event, Erica Enders, fresh off
her 260.11 world record speed in front of her
hometown fans at Baytown, TX, unloaded an
even faster 260.41 mph record on a 5.75 effort
in her Elite Motorsports twin-turbo’d 2018 Ca-
maro. Her Elite teammate, Alex Laughlin, was
the second-quickest machine of the Charlotte
weekend with a 5.70/256.55. As the weekend
progressed, Gonzalez recorded a stellar 259.96
mph speed to become the second fastest
NHRA Pro Mod driver ever, but Erica was the
fleetest pilot in four of six sessions at Charlotte.
She also remains the only driver in drag racing
history to simultaneously own two speed
records in two separate professional NHRA
eliminator categories.
While the debate rages concerning the
viability of nitrous oxide-injected entries under
the current NHRA Pro Mod rules, it should
be noted the spread between the top turbo,
blown and nitrous qualifiers at Charlotte was a
mere ten thousandths of a second…if one only
disregards Jose Gonzalez’s amazing 5.65.

STREET MOTORCYCLE!
In November 2014, during the Manufacturers’
Cup championship at Cecil, GA, motorcycle
superstar Joey Gladstone steered a turbo-
charged Suzuki Hayabusa to a 227.40 mph
speed using a narrow-width rear tire and NO
