BRIAN CHIN TAKES
ADVANTAGE OF
SECOND CHANCE
■
OUTLAW 10.5 DRIVER Brian Chin en-
tered Radial vs. the World at Lights Out
10 with intentions of simply making laps in his
nitrous-assisted, Fulton-powered ’69 Camaro
known as “The Juice.” He needed data on 315
radials after switching from 10.5-inch bias-ply
tires over the offseason. Chin collected data all
the way to the winner’s circle, as he won the Ra-
dial vs. the World Second Chance Race, a second
32-car field thrown together at the last minute.
“From the beginning, every pass we made we
just gained more and more data and went faster
and faster,” Chin says. “We set a personal best of
3.99 on Saturday night and improved that to a
3.96. We’d never been in the threes before, so
to do it for the first time on radials and then to
have Duck actually have a second chance race,
which was unexpected also, was a benefit. To go
rounds and wind up winning the race was just
beyond all belief.”
For his efforts, Chin collected $2,500, a tro-
phy and a customary champagne bottle after
defeating Canada’s Greg Henschell in the final
round. He also gained a clear picture of where his
racing program should go as he chases the Cecil
County Dragway Outlaw 10.5 championship and
event titles at major events along the East Coast.
“We’re going to run the 315s for the rest of the
season in Outlaw 10.5,” Chin says. “The tire is
faster. It’s the new wave or new direction where
drag racing is going in small-tire racing. I like
it. It’s a smoother ride, it’s definitely faster and
it’s improved my program drastically. Whatever
I can do to make myself faster is the way I’m
gonna go.”
The first-time Lights Out competitor will re-
turn to Valdosta in the fall for No Mercy, but his
Greg Maialetti-tuned Camaro will enter Pro 275,
where it should be an immediate power player.
“We only ran Radial vs. the World because
we’d get more time on the track for testing,
but I ran as an Outlaw 10.5-legal car, so I was
actually 300 pounds overweight for RvW,” Chin
reveals. “Then I learned that we can run the
same weight in Pro 275 and just change the
tire and be competitive with the times we’re
running. We just want to be a part of that race
and be competitive.” – NATE VAN WAGNEN
