As has been the case for a decade, promoter
Donald Long’s Lights Out doorslammer extrav-
aganza shattered records in multiple classes
while presenting the largest drag race in the
world of Radial Tire competition. Held again at
Ozzy Moya’s South Georgia Motorsports Park
just north of Valdosta, Georgia, the five-day
burndown produced numbers unseen prior to
the meet.

Missourian Tim Slavens’ crowd favorite
(reasonably) stock-appearing twin-turbo-
charged Hemi-powered 1969 Camaro was the
first to break the existing record in the event’s
headlining Radial Versus The World Eliminator.
Against a 3.623-second world standard set at
the 2018 LO IX by Mark Micke’s twin turbo’d
’78 Malibu, Slavens posted a 3.621 pass at
217.73 miles per hour, a speed second only to
Micke’s 221.20 mph from last season.
It was longtime racer Kevin Rivenbark,
at the helm of a new 1969 Camaro tuned
by Steve Petty which utilizes a ProCharger
centrifugal blower atop a ProLine Hemi, who
shot to the head of DI’s Radial Top 8 with a

stunning 3.621 to lead the attending field of
seventy-six Radial hopefuls. North Carolinian
Rivenbark, who lost only to a redlight start by
six thousandths of a second in the semi-finals
of thirty-two car qualified field, ran under 3.70
seconds on every single testing, qualifying and
elimination run over the five days of the race.
In competition, the white Chevy produced a
seemingly effortless string of three consec-
utive 3.66 passes, numbers which would’ve
been the quickest ever for a Drag Radial car
only fifty-three weeks before.
In fact, only four years and two months af-
ter Brad Edwards’ twin-turbo’d 555-cubic inch
Chevy-powered ’97 Mustang became the first
Radial racer to clock a three-second elapsed
time, it now takes an astonishing 3.663 just to
make the DI Top 8 Elapsed Time list. Likewise,
two drivers, Joe Newsham and Shawn Ayers,
have 212 mph timeslips which are NOT fast
enough to make the DI Top 8 speed list!
Moreover, the DI Top 8 Radial ET rankings
feature a spread of only five hundredths of a
second, the tightest ever grouping. Of those
eight drivers, five are utilizing dual turbocharg-
ers and three use superchargers. However, the
belt-drive gang is represented by a centrifugal
