HOMECOMING
In a universally celebrated decision, the World Series of Drag Racing
returned to Cordova International Raceway for its 64th annual running
after a Memphis version fell flat last year. Fans filled the grandstands as the
storied Illinois dragstrip came alive with the roar of entertaining acts like
big-show Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars, Top Fuel Harleys, jet cars,
and numerous nostalgia classes. These flame-throwing nostalgia Funny
Cars, the “Quickdraw” ’71 Trans Am driven by Joe Haas and the “Runaway”
’70 ½ Camaro wheeled by John Lawson, lit up the night, rewarding the
fans who made a clear statement about where this legendary race belongs.
