The NHRA Sonoma Nationals victory was an emotional one for Top Fuel
veteran turned Funny Car rookie J.R. Todd, driver of the DHL Toyota Camry
Funny Car originally driven by the late Scott Kalitta. Sonoma was the home
track of late Funny Car pilot Eric Medlen, who Todd considered one of his best
friends before the bright young star’s passing in 2006. Together, their history
at Sonoma made Todd’s first Funny Car victory that much more special.
“We’ve been struggling so bad this season; I’m just happy to
win in a Funny Car,” Todd expressed. “I was able to win
here last year in Top Fuel and to be able to come back
and do it again in Funny Car is pretty special.”
