ELIMINATOR QUICKEST DRIVERS
years after Canadian Glen May first steered
a supercharged doorslammer past 220 mph
in a quarter-mile, Scruggs’ Mississippi-based
RJ Race Cars rig went on to clock runs of
3.492/220.08, 3.500 at an amazing 223.54
mph, 3.503/222.99 and an engine-wounding
3.540/216.17. When the event’s last two rounds
were postponed until the Rockingham PDRA
Spring Nationals, Scruggs coaxed a 3.498 at
222.44 from his machine.
However, Scruggs’ backed-up 223 pass was
far from the association’s turbo-dominated PX
speed records and even his confirmed 3.492
failed to claim the ET record. It was Alabamian
Brandon Snider who not only became the second driver of a supercharged racer over 220
mph but reset his own 3.512 World ET mark for
the Pro Extreme division.
Utilizing a one-of-a-kind Liberty twospeed transmission in his Jerry Bickel-built,
Q80-sponsored ’69 Camaro, Snider and
crewchief Jimmy Crenshaw ran quicker than
their PDRA record in testing at 3.511/218.90
and then opened with a 3.522/219.36. Snider
then pounded out a brutal 3.486/219.47,
(only a thousandth of a second off Taylor’s
still-quickest pass from twenty-three months
earlier), and backed it up with what was, most
likely, the second-most incredible PX “shut off
run” ever, a 3.519 at a mere 195.05 mph when
the engine pitched the blower belt before the
finish line. The 330-feet ET was eight thousandths of a second quicker than on the 3.486
which projected to a 3.474 had it remained
under power. Snider continued the most brutal
series of Pro Extreme runs ever recorded with
blasts of 3.515/221.42, (to become the second
driver of a blown entry over 220 mph), a
3.522/220.22 and a 3.498/221.56. Snider went

The astonishing performance increases of the
2016 season force the continual rewriting of
the Drag Illustrated Drag Radial Top 8 lists.
Just since the last issue of DI, the 3.876
record set by Jason Michalak’s “Bad9er” supercharged Chrysler-powered 2008 Corvette has
now been eclipsed by no less than three other
drivers including Kyle Huettel who has taken
over the seat of Michalak’s rig since the loss
of Jason’s father, Kenny, in a crash at Houston
(TX) Motorsports Park. Daniel Pharris’ 210
mph mark has fallen to two drivers including
a 212.26 mph charge by Texan Rob Valden’s
blown 2014 Corvette.
