Bald Hill Prairie Preserve and Jarrett
Nature Center, Byron, IL
Bald Hill’s steep hillsides rise a dramatic
192 feet from the lowest to highest
points. Rare prairie plants and birds have
been found in this new forest preserve
that includes state-endangered woolly
milkweed along with two state-endangered
raptors, the short-eared owl and Northern
harrier. It also has the largest tree of any
species in the state of Illinois. This new
Illinois Big Tree Champion winner is 28.5
feet in circumference and 120 feet tall,
and is estimated to be 200 years old. The
new Jarrett Prairie Center boasts exhibits
and hands-on learning opportunities. It
overlooks 450 acres of restored prairie
offering trail options for exploration. We will
have time to tour and hike at both facilities,
in addition to the Byron Heritage Farm.
Lunch is included at the Prairie View Golf

Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden,
and the Famous Fossil Winery.
Explore the majestic colors of fall in
the 155 acre Klehm’s living museum in
Rockford, IL. Enjoy the 1.8-mile figure-
eight walking path and many other wood-
chipped paths with diverse plant and tree
species. Visit the many gardens featuring
sculptures, gazebos, garden art and special
fall displays. Be sure to plan a stop in
the “Flowering Magnolia” gift shop. Our
afternoon will be at Famous Fossil Winery
in Cedarville, IL. Over 450 million years
ago, northern Illinois was at the bottom of
a sea. Thousands of years later, glaciers
exposed limestone rocks from this ancient
sea. As grapes were planted and trellis
posts erected, fossils began to emerge. The
“Famous Fossil” is a sea sponge on display
in the tasting room. Enjoy a wine tasting and
lunch, then a tour of the winery and vineyard.
