DOZ Inspirational Biography MAYA ANGELOU Mercy James “Nothing will work unless you do.” A famous quote by one the most fantastic wonders that ever walked this planet in human form. She is Maya Angelou. The journey of her life started on the 4th of April 1928, with much excitement over her birth from her family and well-wishers who did not know what life had to offer her but the hope of a brighter future. T he little black American girl at the age of three started having remarkable life experiences when she moved with her brother to stay with their grandmother at Arkansas. At the age of eight, she was raped. Her life took a new turn. With traumatizing memories, Maya began to struggle in an environment where her loss of innocence was not the only source of her tears, but her skin color was also a stigma she could not escape. With several cases of abuse on her, she became a mother at the early age of sixteen. « 16 DOZ Magazine October 2018 In the quest to survive, Maya became many horrible things, which gave her the appearance of nothing but a disaster waiting to happen anywhere she found herself. She worked as a fry cook, became a nightclub dancer who could not say no to the hands of terrible men touching her from every angle. She also became a sex worker with little control over her body. “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude” this quote by Maya Angelou showed no darkness is too thick that it can’t receive light.
