Just a Day at the Beach!

A
s a newlywed, my husband and I loved to visit a beach near our home. It is located near the
base where he was stationed while in the Marine Corps in Jacksonville, NC. One overcast
morning we struck out on an adventure, with Jay at the wheel—because I did not drive. We
had no idea what kind of adventure we were about to encounter!
When we reached Onslow Beach, the
overcast skies had become darker.
However, carefree and glad to have
a day to ourselves, we bounded out
of our car with our beach gear and
headed out to the shore. The beach
was deserted that morning. I didn’t
see anyone at all! It was cool with a
breeze blowing, and the waves were
somewhat choppy, but not enough
to give us hesitation, so we ignored
the weather and waded out into the
now churning, almost gray water.
We spent some time splashing
around and then went back to grab
our float. We wrestled our float in
the rather gusty wind, but finally
