The familiar red-and-white stripes of West Quoddy Head Light (easternmost in the U.S.) stand brightly against the sky to meet the dawn’s gaze. Located at West Quoddy Head State Park, there are seasonal tours of the tower on Saturdays, a visitor’s center, and 550 trail-lined acres to explore. Driving back toward the town of Lubec keep an eye out for the Sparkplug, also known as the Lubec Channel Light. On Campobello Island (bring your passport) you’ll find two more beauties in Head Harbor Light (East Quoddy) and Mulholland Light. Make a day of it with a whale watch and visit to Roosevelt Campobello International Park. North on US 1 stands Whitlocks Mill Light, our nation’s northernmost lighthouse, in a broad S-curve in the St. Croix River. It’s visible by land from the south; however, the best view is from the river. Thinking about getting away from it all? Head to Cutler where the delightfully restored Little River Light now welcomes overnight guests looking to do precisely that. Best viewed from a sightseeing boat, but also reachable by foot, the Bass Harbor Head Light is Acadia’s best known. Set out on the Baker Island Light excursion from Bar Harbor and explore this fascinating 130-acre island. On your way back, enjoy a lingering view of the blocky Egg Rock Light at the mouth of Frenchman Bay. Outdoor adventure lovers may decide to spot some lighthouses via kayak. While a great way to enjoy our waters, for safety we recommend using a guide. Tides and weather can often be unpredictable, and water temperatures rarely exceed 50°, even in summer. Get the kids involved. Eight lighthouses encircle Deer Isle, and you should plan to see them all, but first pick up a U.S. Lighthouse Society Passport to collect a stamp at each.
