TWO LEGENDS RETIRE: RICH HOLDEN AND GRIFF SINGER
Richard Holden, Dow Jones News Fund
Rich Holden left the Fund as executive director in April 2014 after 22
years at the Fund and a total of 41
years with Dow Jones & Company.
He remains a member of the Board
of Directors. Fifty friends, colleagues and former mentees feted
him at a surprise party in June in
New Jersey.

Street Journal elicited
tributes from Dow Jones executives, former Fund alumni and graduates of the Maynard Institute
for Journalism Education’s Editing Program.
“I will forever be grateful to Rich for making it possible for me and so many other minority journalists to make it in this business. He trained us to be the best and cheered us when we reached
our goal,” said Dana Canedy, senior editor, The New York Times.
Griff Singer, University of Austin
Griff Singer retired in September as residency director at the Center for Editing Excellence at
the University of Texas at Austin after running the training program there since 1998. He was a
consummate Texan newsman from 1956-1981.
Griff retired from the School of Journalism in 2003
after 34 years teaching reporting, copy editing,
newspaper design, computer-assisted reporting
and mentoring countless students and professional
journalists.

The level of respect he commanded in the industry
and his Texas media community was a tremendous boon to Fund programs and interns. Griff led
the Associated Press Sports Editors to ally with
the Fund to start the sports copy editing program
in 2002. We owe him overwhelming gratitude for
his wisdom, enthusiasm and commitment to future
journalists.
