2017 WDS to Be
Moved to Leipzig
Leipzig Trade Fair
has obviously not reached all the exhibitors. It was surprising how many, even some very well-known handlers, did
this. Wearing clothing with the dog’s name or your prefix
printed on it is also forbidden, but many breeders’ groups
wore similar outfits with the kennel’s logo and name on
their backs. Double handling is forbidden, too, but in certain breeds, it seems to be the normal procedure without
anybody even trying to stop it. Using hairspray, chalk, gel,
etc., is also forbidden, but how else do they manage to create those tall topknots on the Shih Tzu? In the Breeders’
Groups final, a breeder of Dogue de Bordeaux brought in
six dogs, although the rules say there should be from three
to five dogs.
Unlike other FCI shows, no written critiques were given,
but each dog received a diploma that was marked accordingly. The title winners received beautiful rosettes and cups.
Just before the show, it was announced that the
2017 WDS will not be held in Ecuador as planned but
in Germany. There was a disastrous 7.8-magnitude
earthquake outside of Muisne, Ecuador, in April, so a
dog show is certainly not the first priority there right
now. Germany was second in line during voting, and they
are used to organizing big events. However, it won’t be
held in Dortmund, where all the biggest shows in the
country have been held, but in Leipzig on the eastern
side because the Leipzig Trade Fair was available.
The date was also changed because according to FCI
rules, the WDS and the European Show must not be held
too close to each other timewise. So the next World Dog
Show will be November 9-12, 2017, meaning the dates
of other previously scheduled shows had to change
because there must not be any other international shows
at the same time with the WDS — at least not on the
same continent.

On each of the four days, the main ring program was a little delayed, but despite the many final competitions, it went smoothly because of the pre-judging. Each judge picked six finalists,
which entered the ring and stood under spotlights. Then four
were placed in each competition, starting in reverse order.
Each day there were Best Baby Puppy, Best Puppy, Veteran,
Breeders’ and Progeny Groups, and Braces and Best Junior in
each Group chosen in addition to the actual Groups. Only the
Junior Group winners and the actual Group winners had to
stay for the BIS finals on Sunday, and all of them were present.
