100th Group Win for
Roger the OES
by Sally Stasytis
A
t the Dandenong Poultry & Kennel Society Inc’s 60th
championship show, July 17, 2016, General Specials
judge Ms. Shannon Lancaster (NSW) chose the Old
English Sheepdog Am. Ch./Sup. Aust. Ch. Barkshire’s Captain America (imp. US) for Best in Show. ‘Roger’ is owned by
Chris, Sue and Jason Moore, and has won 100 Best in Groups
and 39 Best in Show awards. This 100th Group win came under judge Mrs. Dayna Johnston.
Roger is currently the No. 1 Old English Sheepdog and No.
1 Herding Dog in Australia. He is also proving his worth, with
progeny throughout Australia earning top honors at all-breed
shows, as well as specialty shows. One of his sons, Aust. Ch.
Perfu Inca Traveller, is leading the Rising Star list for Old
English Sheepdogs and is in the top 5 nationally.
FINLAND
Helsinki Summer Show
OES: SALLY STASYTIS; PYRENEAN MOUNTAIN DOG: TEXTERRI
by Paula Heikkinen-Lehkonen
T
he Helsinki Summer Show, a national all-breed show,
was held in late July at Helsinki’s Sighthound Centre,
which has housed many dog events over the years. It
may need to move locations, unfortunately, because a housing
development may be approved for this land.
Although there was an international show at Kemi, in the
north of Finland, on this same weekend, there were still a
lot of exhibitors: There were about 2,000 dogs entered for
two days.
The Best in Show judge was one of our own all-rounders,
Tanya Ahlman-Stockmari. It was no surprise that the majestic Pyrenean Mountain Dog Int. Ch. Chenespace Tarbesan,
owned by the Salonen family, caught her eye. This must have
been his third time taking the big red rosette for BIS this year.
He has climbed up the Top 10 list and is ranked second now.
Reserve BIS was the young Miniature Poodle Miniwin’s
Made in Heaven, owned and bred by Nina BjörnströmLehtonen. Nina has been breeding Poodles successfully for
a long time. This bitch has only been shown a few times, but
has already claimed her third CC. However, she must wait for
her second birthday to finish her champion title.
Another long-time breeder who did well with a young dog of
her own breeding is Minna Jaakkola, whose Westie, Ch. White
Villan King of Hearts, won the Terrier Group and was third in
the BIS final. Every time shown this dog has gotten Reserve CC,
CC or CACIB, but this was his real breakthrough. He has a little
different pedigree, his dam being a Polish import and his sire
being a son of Russian and New Zealand imports.
Fourth was the Rhodesian Ridgeback Int. Ch. Kizimbi Tikiti, who comes from her breeder-owner Ursula Limnell’s second litter. This young bitch has collected champion titles from
six countries. She was also one of Ursula’s winning breeders’
team on Saturday. Ursula has only bred four litters so far!
The Pastoral Group winner was the Bearded Collie Ch.
Memorylane Uno Dos Tres Flash, owned and bred by Nina
Brusin, a young dog that just recently finished his title. Then
there was year-old Longhaired Miniature Dachshund Aavistuksen Viikinki-Päällikkö, owned by Virpi Werner, who had been
shown only a couple of times before this. Best of the Spitzes
was the 6-year-old Japanese Spitz Int. Ch. Saarnion Oriko,
owned by Virpi and Ida Nyman. The English Setter Saltwater
Halley’s Comet, owned by Mikko Ylitalo, won the Pointing
Gundog Group. Mikko usually handles Afghan Hounds. This
bitch hasn’t been shown much; I think this was only her second show this year. She descends mostly from American lines,
and in this part of the world, you have to know which judge
prefers which type. Most Setters are really used for hunting,
and many judges are passionate supporters of the old Laverack type. The Lagotto Romagnolo Katajakonnun Lord Sacha,
owned by Mari Rautavirta, is a young up-and-coming star,
who I believe finished his title at this show. Last but not least
comes the Borzoi Int. Ch. Phaedra Tamerlane, owned by Simo
