The Traditional Karjaa Show by Paula Heikkinen-Lehkonen

The 30th annual national all-breed show held in early July at the Karjaa Sports Arena in Raasepori was hosted by four local clubs . This year Branislav Rajic from Slovenia reached the record set by the late Seamus Oates from Ireland , having judged at this show 10 times . Three judges , who judged the first show 30 years ago , were invited to celebrate the anniversary : Hans Lehtinen , Eeva Rautala and Kari Salminen . Only two of them were there because Hans Lehtinen died earlier this year . Although crowded , the one-day show saw 1,600 dogs entered , which were shown on a lovely green grass field , and luckily the weather was nice .

The BIS judge was the only Estonian all-breed judge , Maret Kärdi , who is a veterinarian by profession and was the President of the Estonian Kennel Club some years ago . I believe she started her career in the dog world with Schnauzers , but nowadays her beloved companions are a Border Collie and a Boston Terrier . She had 10 beautiful Group winners to choose from , some of them well-known champions but also some fresh new faces .
Best in Show was the young Whippet Sagramour Graceful Henrietta , who gained her qualifying CC right then . Although it was actually her eighth CC , she had to win at least one after her second birthday to become a champion , and she had just turned 2 the day before . She is owned by the well-known longtime Whippet enthusiasts Unto Timonen and Sampo Miettinen , and descends on the dam ’ s side from their breeding , although this one was not actually bred by them . Her sire and her dam ’ s sire are American imports .
Reserve BIS was the famous Lhasa Apso Int . Ch . Chic Choix Cleopatra Eurydice , handled as usual by Sanna Kopola-Hirsimäki . When the commentator announced that the Lhasa was second , Cleopatra marched , looking very self-confident , toward first place at the podium like she was taking for granted that this was her usual place ! Third was a young Italian import , the Jack Russell Terrier Ch . Jackandfish 6 Degrees , owned by Riitta Ajanto and Aletta Yli-Alho . This dog had been shown only a few times , and he finished his champion title just a couple of weeks earlier
. Fourth was the Finnish Hound Nero , owned by Hannu Mujunen . The dog had done very well in hunting trials but has been shown only a couple of times . He won his second CC at this show , so he will likely be a dual champion soon .
The Pastoral Group winner was the Belgian Shepherd Tervueren Int . Ch . Hard Candy ’ s Break Through , owned by Tom and Nina Suoranta . The large FCI Group 2 was won — I believe for the first time in Finland — by the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Ch . Harambee ’ s Daring Diamond , owned by Maija and Marja Heikkilä . Best of the Dachshunds was the Standard Longhaired Int . Ch . Badamtam ’ s Visages Janus , owned by Elina Muuri and Mikael Tikander , champion of eight countries and a Field Trial Champion as well . The Spitz Group winner was the 1-year-old Akita Inuline Hard As A Rock , owned and bred by Hanna Kukkola . Best of the Pointing Gundogs was another successful youngster , the Gordon Setter Ch . Goango Black Jasmine , owned by Minna Alanko and Anne Hentunen , bred by the latter . Then we had the Lagotto Romagnolo Ch . Bazolo Dioro di Mario , owned and bred by Inge-Maj and Justo Estupinan .
Best Veteran in Show was Tarja Hovila ’ s English Springer Spaniel Int . Ch . Adamant ’ s Gloria Swanson , 8 years old and a mother of four litters but still going strong . She was one of Tarja ’ s Breeder ’ s Group , which placed second , while Petri Turunen ’ s Keeshond team of Eerondaali fame was first .
