Jay Hyman Remembers Bob

Jay Hyman Remembers Bob

I learned more about dogs from him , sitting at the Taft Bar in NYC after specialties and the Garden , talking dogs at 2 a . m ., than at all the seminars I ever took . He discussed not only the dogs themselves , but the art of entering , choosing a judge and showing the dogs . I visited him at his kennel , Grayarlin , early on , and he introduced me to the Farrells , who were my sponsors to the Greyhound Club . He would evaluate any dog fairly , without any biases . I am sure he was competitive , but as an exhibitor or judge , he never played games or was unpleasant ( of course , he beat me most of the time ).
When my son ( also Robert , now 57 years old and 6 feet 4 inches tall ) entered his first show as a junior , I noticed Bob was immediately in front of him and told him to just copy everything he did . Every time he saw Robert , Bob would give him a lesson on handling .
The most exciting matchup I ever saw was when Bob flew overnight with the Goldsteins ’ Greyhound bitch to Santa Barbara to compete with Corky Vroom and his Greyhound bitch owned by Nat and Gloria Reese , under the English judge Dickie James . The judging probably took 45 minutes , and you saw two masters that worked like hell to win . There were more people around that ring than a Group ring . I am sure many will miss him , but none more than I . — Jay Hyman , Rollings Ridgebacks , Breeder of Merit , AKC Judge

Joan E . Barrett

FEBRUARY 5 , 1938 - JULY 4 , 2016 BY JOAN SCHURR-KEFELI

James N . Barrett , age 83 of Pickerington , Ohio , died Wednesday , May 18 , 2016 . He was in the United States Air Force for 25 years , where he retired as a Senior Chief Master Sergeant . A former Military Man of the Year , James was decorated by President Johnson . After his time in the service , he worked for the Social Security Administration of Fairfield County , where he would retire from . James was a past president of the Central Ohio Kennel Club , the Columbus Collie Club and a registered judge for the American Kennel Club .

It ’ s not often we can find a person to donate his time and efforts for a kennel club . But “ Jim ” spent hours and days with new owners , showing them the ropes . He never refused anyone . Instead he would indulge them and welcome them into the sport . Jim held many positions in the clubs to which he belonged , and he will always be remembered for his professionalism and honesty .
Jim ’ s wife , Joan E . Barrett , died at age 77 just 47 days after her beloved husband . Both of their deaths were a shock and

a terrible loss to the dog show world .
A retiree of Pickerington Local Schools where she worked in the cafeteria , Joan was a past officer and lifetime member of the Central Ohio Kennel Club , the Columbus Collie Club and the American Kennel Club . Like her husband , she offered her time and talents to all and never turned away anyone who had a problem or question .
I knew of no other couple that matched the Barretts ’ efforts to make things better for all . They are missed for their friendship and knowledge , and especially by the members of the Central Ohio Kennel Club and the Collie Club of Ohio , and their friends and family . Joan and James are survived by their children , grandchildren and many close family , friends and neighbors .

Kathleen (“ Kathy ”) Grosso

APRIL 5 , 1937 - SEPTEMBER 8 , 2016 BY LILIAN BARBER

From the time she joined the Kennel Club of Palm Springs in 1980 , Kathy Grosso was one of the driving forces in getting this group started on the path to where the club is today , holding one of the largest and most prestigious show weekends of the year . She served in numerous positions with the club and was Vice President at the time of her passing . After a stint as Show Chair early on , she continued to be deeply involved in the club ’ s very successful shows by assisting her husband , Vince , during his tenure as Show Chairman .

Kathy was a devoted wife and mother , and after her children had matured and she retired from a business career , she found the time not only to serve the dog clubs to which
