Day Three
Day three’s events started off with the Obedience and Rally
Trials, judged by Elizabeth Chase. The Highest Scoring Dog
in the Regular Classes was Ch. Polo’s Oolong To Me N’ Myway, owned by Cynthia Robicheau and Lorianne Amadeo. In
the Rally trial, the Highest Combined Score in Excellent B
and Advanced B was Ch. Xzotika’s Rik-O-Shay CD, RE, OA,
OAJ, CGC. This multi-titled dog is owned by Mikki Razor and
Jarnell Carter.
As the time for the Sweepstakes judging drew near, the
weather decided to become uncooperative, and a downpour
ensued. Not to be conquered by mere raindrops, the judge,
Rosemary Sutton of Summerwind Afghan Hounds, presided
over the ring as though she were back at her home in sunny El
Cajon, Calif. She awarded Best in Veteran Sweepstakes to the
10-year-old GCh. High Kaliber’s Marked Chivalry JC, owned
by Nicole and Shawn Hollinger. The Best Opposite in Veteran
Sweepstakes went to GCh. Lafara’s Crazy In Love owned by
Maria Falkenheimer.
In the regular Sweepstakes classes, the Best in Sweepstakes was awarded to Lafara’s Rockin On The River, also
owned by Maria Falkenheimer. The Best of Opposite Sex
went to Paladin Sweet Tart Of Spice Hill owned by Michael
Liss and Teri Tevlin.
The weather turned the corner in time for the judging of
the Dog classes, which allowed the exhibits to use the full
ring and demonstrate the movement so desired in the breed.
Stephen Fisher of Watkins, Colo., and a partner in the wellknown Shylo Kennels, presided over the judging of the Dog
classes. The Winners Dog came from the 12-18 Month class,
and for the second time on the same day, the nod went to
Lafara’s Rockin On The River, handled to the win by Karen
Wagner for owner Maria Falkenheimer. (Who says lightning
can’t strike twice in the same spot?)
The Reserve Winners Dog came from the Open class, Willowmoor Play With Silver Lining Of Kaihorn, owned by Myrna
Brin, Melissa Heymann and Dr. Edna Martin. He was shown
by Lisa Bettis.
Following the judging for the day, a seminar for junior handlers was presented by Alicia Morrison Jones and Tara Richardson, both of whom have handled Afghan Hounds to top
awards as professionals. There were four aspiring handlers
in attendance ranging in ages from nine to 17 years of age.
Swag bags full of show-related gifts were given to each of the
Juniors, compliments of Purina.
The day concluded with the annual breeders education
symposium and buffet dinner. The presentation addressed
how to maximize litter size and the use of assisted reproductive techniques. Dr. Gail J. Schmeider, DVM, was the
featured speaker.
Day Four
Continuing with the education offerings the next morning,
Bob and Helen Stein led the presentation for those aspiring
to judge Afghan Hounds in the Judges Education session. Bob
and Helen have owned, bred and judged Afghan Hounds over
the years and are considered pillars of the breed by many.
There was a content portion of the seminar followed by
hands-on demonstrations with selected dogs. Ringside mentoring was then conducted during the judging of the Bitch classes. It was of interest that most of the 19 attendees were noted
at ringside the next day for the Best of Breed competition.
Dr. Jerry Klein of Sebring Afghan Hounds presided over
the Bitch judging in the afternoon. Residing in the Windy
City, Chicago, in his professional life he is a supervising veterinarian at an emergency and specialty center, as well as
the Chief Veterinary Officer for the AKC. His Winners Bitch
came from the Open Class, Luu Luu Aswad Bint Benazir Von
Haussman, owned by Ramon Podesta, Juan Pio Milano and
Rodrigo Quezada. She was shown by Anna Stromberg. The
