Yesterday’s Handlers Are
Today’s Judges
Standard Poodle Ch. De Russy Lollypop, Top Dog 1969, was shown by Frank Sabella, and the Boxer Ch. Treceder’s
Painted Lady, Top Dog 1963, was handled by Joe Gregory. Frank Sabella is approved to judge multiple Groups, and
Joe Gregory is an all-breed judge. Both are still active as judges at AKC shows.
Two Top Kennels
English Springer Spaniel Ch. Salilyn’s Aristocrat, Top Dog in 1967, was also the all-time top sire of all breeds with 188
champions to his credit. The Norwegian Elkhound Ch. Vin-Melca’s Vagabond was Top Dog 1970. The Salilyn and VinMelca kennels have had more Top Dog contenders in the last five decades than any other kennels. Salilyn Springers
won BIS at Westminster twice; their breeder, Julia Gasow, died in 1999. The Vin-Melca Elkhounds are still going strong
and have an all-time record of 10 Group wins at Westminster, all owner-handled by Patricia Craige Trotter.
