SHOW SCENE W PAULA PASCOE 104 e’re reporting the BIS results of 119 all-breed shows held over four weekends spanning the last weekend of September and the third weekend of October. It would have been 126 shows if not for the cancellation of seven events due to extreme weather conditions. There were no shows with entries in excess of 2,000 dogs, though a couple shows came close. We count 41 shows with an entry of fewer than 500 dogs — that’s about one-third of all shows held during this time period. With a total of just over 82,000 entries, the average of the shows listed here was less than 700 dogs. On the weekend starting at the end of September, there were 30 events held in 14 cities. With 21,755 entries involved, the average entry per show was 725 dogs. Only three events attracted more than 1,000 entries. The first weekend of October was the busiest and would have been even more so if not for the cancellation of all five shows of a cluster in Virginia due to bad weather. As it was, the 30 events held in 13 venues drew 22,972 dog entries, making for an average of 766 dogs per show. The biggest show held on the weekend was the Saturday event in Romulus, N.Y., with another sizeable show held in Monroe, Mich., on the same day. The six events involved at those locations were the only ones attracting more than 1,000 dogs on this weekend. The second weekend in October involved 25 shows at 12 sites, and would have been 27, but two events in Florida were canceled because of Hurricane DOGSinREVIEW.com Matthew. The 16,500 or so dog entries resulted in an average of about 660 dogs per show. A great many very small events brought the average down for the weekend, despite the involvement of the largest show in this report, the Hatboro event in Pennsylvania, with 1,916 dogs entered. The two shows bracketing that one also drew good entries, made up largely of Terriers, as these shows preceded the great Montgomery Terrier event on the Sunday. Our report concludes with 34 events held in 14 states over the third weekend in October. With well over 20,000 entries involved, the average was just over 600 dogs per show. We note a number of new names listed among the BIS winners, as well as some breeds that are rarely seen standing alone at the end of the day, while of course our top-ranked dogs are continuing their successes as well.
