Two-Day National Show in Gimo
by Paula Heikkinen-Lehkonen

The Uppsala Regional Kennel Club held a two-day national all-breed show in the middle of September at Gimo , which lies about one hour ’ s drive north from Stockholm . It was one of the last outdoor shows of the season . You never know what the weather will be like in September , but luckily the weather was fantastic . There were about 2,000 dogs entered , and although it was a national show , there were many exhibitors and judges from other countries as well .

I had the honor of judging BIS . I thought the Group winners were quite even in quality , and no one looked like the obvious winner — until the last winner came in , representing the Sighthound Group . He was a real eye catcher , a most elegant big white Borzoi dog who just glided around the ring . When I had the opportunity to have a closer look at this gorgeous creature , there was nothing disappointing , so I just had to decide which ones will be second , third and fourth .
So it was the Borzoi , Int . Ch . Borscana Eurocub , who got the big red rosette for BIS . He is owned and bred by Rickard Sellin and Lise Edland , and handled by the former . They have been breeding Borzois for 20 years and have done a lot of winning . Afterward I was told that one of their Borzois had been BOB at Crufts this year . I remember some years ago when I was in Australia and made an absolute dream of a Borzoi Best in Show . Later on , when we were taking photos , I asked his handler where he came from , and she answered , “ From Sweden , Borscana kennel !”
My Reserve was the Miniature Schnauzer Ch . New Era ’ s Tokyo , homebred by Yvonne Broberg . There has been a lot of discussion about correct type in Miniature Schnauzers . They really should look like the Standard Schnauzer in every respect , just smaller . Having had wirehaired dogs all my life , I just hate to see the abundant silky leg hair on Schnauzers because it tells me immediately that the coat texture is not correct . A good wiry coat does not grow like that !
In the US Miniature Schnauzers are in the Terrier Group ,
which in my opinion leads to incorrect type . Many European breeders have imported dogs from the US and usually got bad coats with them , too . We Terrier people would never dream of shaving their heads and necks ; we pluck every hair with the fingers to keep it wiry and to maintain the color . Schnauzer coats are usually ( if they are correct ) much easier to strip , and still the Schnauzer people say they can ’ t do it . Well , if you have shaved it with a machine before , you can ’ t !
So , for once I saw a correctly groomed correct coat on a Miniature Schnauzer , with wiry leg hair and no hanging “ skirt ” under the belly ! It is possible ! Oh , how I hope other breeders would follow Mrs . Broberg ’ s example ! The dog was beautiful otherwise , too , and had a straight tail .
Third was the Lhasa Apso Int . Ch . Rebellic ’ s In The Spotlight , owned and bred by Anna Tommila . She is sired by the UK import Ch . Oraysha Joshua Tree and has champion titles from five countries . Fourth was the Kerry Blue Terrier Int . Ch . Shyloch President , another great one bred by Helge Kvivesen in Norway but owned in Sweden by Elisabeth Skålberg .
The other Group winners were the Briard Cartier Monzerat Mannen , owned by Liselotte Storm ; the Keeshond Int . Ch . Arctic Kees Dancing with the Stars , owned by Kristina Höglund ; the Bavarian Mountain Bloodhound Int . Ch . Genius Pathfinder , owned by Jan Pagén and Kristine Balcere ; the Longhaired Weimaraner Int . Ch . Lockfågelns Dodge Victory , owned by Mia Källberg ; and the Lagotto Romagnolo La Gottis Calina , owned by Liselotte Claar Tärning .
