She seduces me. She provides me with mornings full of tight lines that I feel spoiled in an ebullient euphoria. Then the next morning she gives me a swift kick in the globules. She is a cruel mistress of a river. She takes me away from my family for a morning that turns into a whole day. She takes away from my work in the form of day reveries. I see her in the spring when she puts on that unsullied green lingerie that makes my mouth water. In the winter I am still drawn to her, even when my guides freeze she keeps my heart in a zealous state. At the end of the day I am always leaving her, she never leaves me. I hate her. I love her. I hate that I love her. She is a limestone courtesan that exasperates me beyond conviction and just when I say I am going to give her up, the line goes tight. I am reminded that she maintains my very being. She knows this too. She knows that I will be back to wet a line in shallows in bids to reap what she holds. I know that I am not the only man in her life, and more or less I am pathetically okay with this. More often than not she leaves me empty handed, but somehow I am always left with a smile. She takes my flies and eats my leader, but I forgive her for who she is and what she does. I am always magnanimous toward her at the end of the day. She is a pristine paramour. Through time she teaches me things I thought never existed. Mostly she teaches me things about myself. Someday, I will move on from her picturesque shrouding grip. But beyond every mountain and hill there is a mistress. I will find another to fill the obligatory void in my heart. Every turn of God’s green earth they will be running their free-stone commerce. And there you will find me paying homage.

Dry Fly of the Week Presented by Dry Fly Inovations

The Elk Hair Caddis is a staple for the angler in our nation's western waters. Its often a "go to" fly when we see fish rising in great numbers, or when fish are hardly rising at all. Being effortless on the tying bench and recurring success on the water makes the EHC a respected fly in any box. Fish it sizes 14-16 when trout are porpoising or "rolling." Leave the floatant at home! I like to fish caddis in the film or right below as the pupae often struggle with the drift to break their caccoons to get to the surface.
